Who shall be concerned about these open document formats OpenDocument Format (ODF) and Portable Document Format/Archive (PDF/A) ? (Swedish and International ISO Standards) Directly concerned are of course all users entering and storing text, spreadsheet, and presentation information using office software suites and who want to access this information by using any brand of office software. Even more concerned shall decision makers be in all type of enterprises that are dependent on access to critical information stored in enterprise and business systems, document management systems, and archiving and preservation systems where the information must be accessible and readable at any time in the future. Decision makers that do not accept that ICT vendors demand customers to buy and use a vendor specific software suite as a prerequisite for customers to access own information assets (also called "vendor lock-in"). The risk of vendor lock-in is obviously very high for enterprises handling high values and intellectual values over time; typically institutions like archives, culture preservation institutions, libraries, publishing houses, magazines, banks-/insurance and financial services actors, lawyers, accountants, intellectual property law firms, purchasing agencies, development and sales of drugs and medical/healthcare products, research, education, information and communications agencies, and enterprises and agencies under the reigns of state/national/county/local government being responsible for important community services and inclusive policies, publishers, editors, press and other media, and everyone else caring for the free word. Also, authorities, business partners, customers and other partners expect business partners in turn to comply with the legal jurisdiction (regulatory affairs, regulatory compliance) on a national/international basis with a committed guarantee in tracking of business transactions, errand management, and management of cultural and preservation values. All type of enterprises, regardless of industry sector, must take measures to secure that own information resources are accessible in formats that are completely independent of ICT vendors, ICT systems, and ICT applications. Open and standardized document formats are needed for this to happen. All information in vendor-specific formats have to be NewFormat AB All content © copyright 2008-2026 NewFormat AB.
